"🇪🇹PM Abiy Ahmed Deploys Military Convoys to Counter Egypt’s 10,000 Troops in Somalia as Tensions Rise; H.E Abshir Aden Ferro Responds to Escalating Conflict"

Ethiopia is transporting long convoys of armored personnel carriers (APCs) and various other combat vehicles into the Somali borders including the regions of Bakool, Bay, and Gedo. These deployments are being carried out as a preemptive measure to counteract and respond to Egypt's increasing presence in Somalia.

This movement signals a significant escalation in military preparedness, indicating Ethiopia's concern over regional stability and its strategic interests in the Horn of Africa.

Egypt is reportedly sending 10,000 troops to Somalia. Things could escalate very quickly in the Horn of Africa

To understand why Egypt sent soldiers to Somalia clearly, we need to consider the longstanding tensions between Egypt and Ethiopia.

Egypt and Ethiopia have been at odd since ~2011, when Addis Ababa began building a vast hydro dam on the headwaters of the River Nile. Egypt had claimed that this dam is a threat to its water supply as it disturbs waterflow.

For Egypt, the Nile is the source of nearly all of its fresh water. It especially needs it for agriculture. The Nile is also used to fill Lake Nasser, the reservoir for Egypt's own hydro-electric power plant, the Aswan High Dam.

Multiple rounds of negotiations have tried to resolve this issue, including a U.S.-brokered effort in 2019, with little success.

Egypt pours 10,000 soldiers into Somalia.

The Egyptian force is sent as part of the African Union's mission to stabilize Somalia.

Of course, this is not due to philanthropy, but in the background there is a conflict over the dam and Ethiopia's agreement with Somaliland that may lead to its recognition, therefore this indicates in-avoidable signs of war…
