Maryam Mursal Isse Botan | Abshir’s Heritage

There is something I would like you to know about my mother’s family.

The Isse Botan name goes a long way through the history of Somalia, overcoming many of the challenges our nation has faced. 

Because of this, I am proud to call myself a part of this family, whose strength and courage has built a legacy reaching far and wide across the country. 

You may remember that I first shared this video over a year ago, but now her words seem more important than ever. Many years ago, my cousin, Maryam Isse Botan, sang this beautiful song to uplift a nation without a voice and make our leaders understand that there must be a change for the sake of Somalia’s future. 

We are a family of peace. It runs in my DNA, and that is the only way we will succeed as a nation. I am grateful for the values that my mother and her family have taught me. They are the inspiration for my success, and they gave me the chance at life to stand up for my nation on an international level without prejudice, tribalism or discrimination.

It is time we stood up together and create a legacy that we all dream of. I urge all opposition and Farmajo: there is to be no bloodshed, only peace.
